CHAPTER FIVE

SMITHY

Swainson and Long solicitors rented the whole of the first floor of an office block just outside the city centre. Chalmers parked his car in the car park.

“Look at this place,” he said. “They obviously do alright for themselves.”

“Crime pays,” Smith said. “Especially for the lawyers.”

“You don’t like lawyers very much do you?”

“Lawyers and journalists, scum of the earth both of them. They both prey on suffering and despair.”

They went inside the building and walked up to a reception desk with a marble counter. A stern looking woman with a beak nose eyed them both with suspicion.

“Can I help you?” She said.

“We need to speak to Howard Weston,” Chalmers said.

“He’s busy. You can contact him when he’s not working.”

Chalmers took out his ID and placed it on the counter in front of her. She glanced at it and picked up the phone in front of her.

“Mr Long,” she said. “There are two police officers at the front desk. They say they want to speak with Howard.”

There was a pause on the other end of the line.

“OK,” the woman said and replaced the handset.

“Mr Long will be along shortly,” she said.

“It isn’t Mr Long we’re here to speak to,” Smith said.

The woman ignored him and turned her attention to a pile of papers on her desk.

A few minutes later, two men walked in. Smith recognised one of them.

“Good morning, officers,” the elder of the two said. “Duncan Long. What seems to be the problem? This is my kingdom.”

Smith took an instant dislike to him. He had the kind of arrogance that Smith despised. The younger man stared at Smith.

“Smithy?” he said. “Jason Smith? It is you.”

Smith realised who he was. They had been in the same year when Smith had studied law. His name was Charles Denton and Smith remembered he didn’t have much time for him when he was at University.

“So, it’s true,” Denton said. “You really did join the opposition. How’s that going for you? Do they pay you enough to buy one of these?”

He rolled up his sleeve and showed Smith a Rolex watch.

“I don’t wear a watch,” Smith said. “We need to speak to Howard Weston.”

“What for?” Long said.

“That’s none of your business,” Chalmers was starting to get annoyed.

“Au contraire,” Long smiled a smug smile. “It is very much my business when two police officers march into my palace and start harassing my staff.”

“Mr Long, Mr Weston is a witness to a serious crime. I’m sure your knowledge of the law extends to obstruction of justice. If you need some help, my colleague here would be more than willing to educate you.”

Smith couldn’t stop the smile that stretched across his face.

“Now,” Chalmers continued. “I suggest you point us in the direction of Mr Weston and let us do our jobs.”

Long stood with his mouth wide open. The smug smile was gone.

“Miss Deacon,” Long said to the woman with the beak nose. “Please let Howard know he is needed by the police. I believe the conference room is free.
